about

Crossing Borders is a project encompassing three compositions, “Migration”, “Invasion” and “Seeking Refuge”. The project was shaped by considering human emotional responses to migration depending on the species involved.

“Migration” contemplates the warmth and nostalgia of seeing a flock of geese flying south for the winter. This type of scenario is generally considered the definition of migration, with very little, if any, negative connotation.

“Invasion” is influenced by the introduction of European Starlings into America in 1890, when 100 birds were released in Central Park. Current population is now estimated at two hundred million birds, cause $800 million worth of agricultural damage per year, endangering aircraft and causing the decline of some indigenous birds by taking over nesting sites.

“Seeking Refuge” is a reflection on the plight of asylum seekers and the perilous journeys they often endure, especially over open seas
